More likely the new 8.5 Version of the Notes Client detected a problematic with the current mail file local replica...
Did you save the bad mail file? I would suggest opening a PMR with Lotus Support and send them the bad file... Also open a PMR that says to improve the error message to state what file was the problematic file in question...
